Glycemic Indexes – Discerning The Proper Foods To Eat

March 10, 2010 by: Health and Fitness Guru

As what the saying is trying to bring about, we can all say that it is true.
We all have our own guilty pleasures.

Practices that are very hard to break since our bodies are already used to eating the same kind of food. Most of us don’t really think about the effects of eating food that have elevated glycemic indexes. Donuts, cookies, ice cream, chocolate bars, candies, and even potato chips are some of the foods known to have elevated glycemic indexes. Foods that have this high glycemic level break down faster in the body causing blood sugar levels to spurt quickly as well. Consuming these kinds of food will make you hungry in between meals resulting to unhealthier snacking.
Start managing your sugar intake because if you have a very high glycemic index or once you are diagnosed with diabetes, several complications may occur, endangering your life and this will be very costly.

Insulin is produced by our body to control or regulate our blood sugar level, maintaining it within a fairly narrow range. And if you have a high glycemic index, your body will have a difficult time producing more insulin to control your sugar level. If you already have diabetes, your body produces less and less insulin or no insulin at all. This is very crucial and will cause your body to go into shock whether you have a very high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia) blood sugar level.

The organ responsible for the production of insulin is the pancreas. If it produces little or no insulin at all, this is called type I diabetes. And if it produces too little insulin or if your body is resistant to the effects of insulin, this is called type II diabetes. This condition can cause long term complications and among them is nerve damage, blindness, kidney failure, and erectile dysfunction just to name a few.
Once you are diagnosed with diabetes, you have to change your diet but this doesn’t mean that you can longer eat what normal people without diabetes are eating. Just eat nutritious foods in moderate amounts and always monitor your blood sugar level, this should also be observed by those who don’t have the disease.
Slash your food intake gradually, this will facilitate your body to adapt easily to the changes you will make to your eating habits.

Try eating in small amounts and in short intervals, this will allow your body to burn the calories better and faster. Eat foods that have low glycemic indexes and avoid junk foods.
Quit while you are still ahead as the saying goes. We should all start to be conscious of what we eat, and we should always maintain moderation. Too much of anything can be dangerous.
Diabetes can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. This means maintaining a healthy balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise or increased physical activity. This will not only prevent diabetes but other diseases as well, and will guarantee a happier and more productive life.
